Bob Halgren

Bob Halgren
La Mesa, California

My interest in Studebakers dates from my days as a tyke. My dad, following in his dad’s footsteps, liked Studebakers. We had a ’54 Land Cruiser and ’37 Dictator 4-door sedan. After a bout with “Brand X’s” in the early 80‘s, I returned to the fold with a ’51 2R11 as my main work truck and a ’62 GT as our family transportation.
We currently have 12 Studes scattered over 2 states. Five are good drivers, with our ’37 Dictator Coupe being our only running antique. We also have a ’35 Dictator sedan which is on the docket for a restoration in the next year or two and 4 early 30’s big trucks awaiting a 4 to make 1 project.
I have been the San Diego Chapter SDC club President and PSW Zone Meet chair. I am currently the Turning Wheels Advertising Arbiter. Mimi and I are members of ASC, SDC, 3 SDC chapters, and 2 ASC chapters. I believe I have the experience necessary to represent the best interests of my fellow ASC members as an ASC Board member.

Charlie Steffy

Charlie Steffy
Altamonte Springs, Florida

I am Charlie Steffy, the ASC’s largest member. I enjoy touring in my 1941 Commander Skyway Cruising Sedan and have taken it on two AACA Glidden Tours, an AACA Founder’s Tour and an AACA Sentimental Tour. In addition to AACA tours, this trusty Studebaker has taken me on six ASC Fall Roundups in the Northeast every October. The more you drive Studebakers the better they run!

I am honored to be asked to serve again on the Board of Directors. Keeping the club active and the membership informed is critical to a successful organization. Your officers and directors have done an outstanding job in keeping prewar Studebaker owners up to date and connected. Our editor continues to produce the highest quality newsletter of any single make club out there. Now all we need is your continued participation in our events.

We try to balance the locations of our functions and activities so that all the fun is not skewed to the East Coast, the West Coast or the Deep South. No matter where you go there are antique Studebaker people everywhere and we all love to drive our cars! Case in point…I had the pleasure recently to meet many of our members in New Zealand as I am participating in the VCC ten day rally in Wanganui New Zealand. What a great group of Studebaker motorists!

If re-elected to the board I will continue to promote good times and good tours throughout the country. My father was a Studebaker dealer in Lititz PA and Studebakering is in my blood. Mike Margerum and I have arranged another fun Fall Roundup in Lititz, PA. It will be the Monday before the big AACA Fall Meet in Hershey. More details on that will be in the Review. Thank you for your support and I look forward to meeting more of you at upcoming meets.

Dave Peterson

Dave Peterson
Yucca Valley, California

I joined the Antique Studebaker Club over 5 years ago. I'm also a member of the Southern California Chapter of the ASC. Even though I have only been around for a few years, I have already attended 4 International Meets and I'm making plans to be in South Bend. During the Internationals in Lancaster, I was asked to be a member in judging the class 1 antiques. Since then, I also helped during the Meet in Springfield. Last year I rode my Gold wing with Denise while my son Eric rode my Harley-Davidson.
Even though I do enjoy judging, my favorite activity is just driving our cars. Nothing is better than getting my wife Denise, my family members, along with fellow club members and go out and tour. I also enjoy riding my motorcycles.

Frank Wenzel

After joining the ASC Board, I’ve been fortunate to meet many of the members and their Studebakers. I feel the cars are a passion we share with others to create lifetime friends as I have with many of you. Let’s make it a goal this year to get more of those prewar cars out and enjoy driving them. There are so many people in our club that have the wealth of knowledge to help us enjoy these cars. I want to do more to get you and those people together to share your passion for these wonderful pieces of art and antiquity. It takes a lot of people to make this happen in our club and I want to thank all of you for your contribution. I hope to lead this group forward for more people to enjoy Studebakers. By combining all of the above, we can work to get others interested making the hobby more fun for everyone. I would like to see each one of you cast your vote this year to expand our hobby to someone younger or older by knowing you’re involved. Your vote does count!

George Vasso

George Vasso
Westfield, Massachusetts

My name is George Vassos. I live in Westfield, Massachusetts. I have enjoyed working on cars since I was a teenager. I have been a member of the Studebaker Drivers Club and Avanti Owners Association since 1978, when my buddy George Rohrbach introduced me to Studebakers, while we were in dental school together. I have restored a number of Studebakers before making my first foray into the world of pre-war Studebakers about 10 years ago. I did a total restoration of a 1923 Studebaker Light Six Roadster and I was hooked. I joined the Antique Studebaker Club about that time and have met many wonderful people in the ASC. I now count many of the Antique Studebaker Club members as my friends. Currently, I am restoring a 1932 Studebaker President 4 door convertible sedan – one of two known to exist. I consider myself the current caretaker of this very special classic era Studebaker. I enjoy listening, reading and learning about these wonderful pieces of American history and I also enjoy sharing what I have learned with others. I quickly learned that the best way to restore one of the pre-war Studebakers is through networking with others in the club. I look forward to the honor of serving as a board member and expanding my help to others and networking to make a stronger Antique Studebaker Club.

Gerry Kurtz

Gerry Kurtz
Dover, Pennsylvania

In 1966 at the age of 17 I bought my first Studebaker from a junk yard for $50. As a machinist apprentice this was my daily transportation. In 1986 I started restoring the car and have been driving regularly since then. I have driven it to several national meets. I have also restored a 37 Coupe Express, a 39 K15M cabover truck, and I am currently finishing a 1937 President State coupe. My drivers also include a 1950 Commander Starlight coupe and a 1955 Speedster. Since my first national meet in Nashville, 1992 I have attended most national meets and plan on continuing to do so.
Having owned two manufacturing businesses for 30 yrs I retired in 2007 and have continued my business of building overdrive transmissions for pre-war cars. My passion is helping fellow Studebaker drivers keep their cars in driving condition.

Kent Haberle

Kent Haberle
New Cumberland, PA

The acquisition of a 1929 Studebaker President State Sedan in 1974 was Kent's introduction to Studebaker -- and he has never looked back! Studebaker history, the automobiles themselves, the company promotion of their endurance and style, as well as a working knowledge of the mechanical aspects -- are all interests. A member of the ASC since 1976, he was first elected to the ASC Board in 2000, and took over the management of the ASC Club Store in 2001. More recently, he served as the host for the 2008 ASC International Meet in Lancaster, PA. And, joining two other ASC members, he participated in an historic 1929 Studebaker representation at the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis Motor Speedway Celebration "Pace Car Reunion" in May 2011, with a 1929 Studebaker President Tourer, for which he serves as the current caretaker.

Larry Tholen

Larry Tholen
Wichita, Kansas

Larry Tholen’s Studebaker hobby interests began in 1975 with a ’29 Commander 8 Victoria; that was succeeded by a ’35 President 8 Regal Sedan, then his next two Studebakers were post-WWII, until 2004 when he acquired his current ’32 Rockne Six “75” rumble-seat Coupe. Not caring to “give up” his ’57 Transtar ½-ton pickup, Larry became a two-Studebaker owner. Other Studebaker interests include collections of various memorabilia, toy/model Studebaker-related vehicles, and its corporate history. He compiles and maintains the Rockne Registry for ASC and SDC. Retired from banking, he lives in Wichita, KS, and has been ASC Treasurer since Jan. 2004.

Malcolm Stinson

Malcolm Stinson
Show Low, Arizona

From 1958 until the end of production, Malcolm was the Service Manager of Mystic Motors Studebaker
in Mystic, Connecticut. His employment there was a result of his father being a life-long Studebaker
owner and good friend of John Hess, the dealership’s owner. While there, Malcolm purchased and
restored a Reo-built Wolverine, followed by the restoration of a “basket case” 1915 Overland and a
1922 Model T Center Door Sedan. Presently, he has a collection of 10 pristine Studebakers plus several
that, in his words, “are not so nice”. In 1965, Malcolm organized the Westerly Pawcatuck Region of the
AACA. In recent years, he started the ASC’s Arizona chapter and has served two terms as its President.
He would be very pleased to serve on the ASC Board and would appreciate your support.

Sam Bailey

Sam Bailey
Downey, California

I’ve been involved with Studebakers since 1996, when my wife Rhonda and I accidentally came across the International Meet in Long Beach, Ca. Being a lifelong mechanic and currently with 27 years as a vehicle technician with Verizon, I’ve always had a fascination with prewar cars that I also shared with my Father. That led me to participate in the reincarnation of the Southern California Chapter of the Antique Studebaker Club in July 2002. Currently, I am proud to say I’m the current President. This great group of people in the club has not only kept it interesting and fun, but has been very supportive in my learning process of the hobby of Studebakers. With Rhonda’s help, we now share a small collection consisting of a 1936 Dictator Sedan, 1953 2R5 pick up and her beautiful red 1961 Hawk. We both look forward to attending our local chapter meetings and hearing all our friends’ wonderful stories. Every year since, it seems that we plan our vacations to include Studebaker events around the country.
